In the ongoing pursuit of clinical excellence, Southwest
Regional Cancer Center (SWRCC) has recently added radiation
services to central Austin. Using advanced radiation
technology, our highly trained and experienced staff looks
forward to providing individualized, quality care.
Treatment design begins with CT simulation. Using the GE
LightSpeed Simulator, cross-section images are obtained,
allowing the physician to observe internal anatomy (tumor and
organs especially) in the treatment position. A 3-dimensional
reconstruction of the patient is then developed for treatment
configuration.
Treatment design continues as a joint effort between
Dosimetrist, Medical Physicist, and Radiation Oncologist. Using
a Varian Eclipse Planning System, customized plans are
developed, from simple to extremely conformal Intensity
Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT – designed especially for complex
targeting and sparing radiation sensitive normal organs).
Radiation treatments are delivered using a state-of-the-art
Varian 2100 IX linear accelerator, integrated to the system,
insuring accurate delivery of the planned treatment. This
superb technology includes precise patient positioning,
multi-leaf collimation and dynamic wedges (for rapid shaping of
the radiation beam), On Board Imaging (OBI – to obtain immediate
images confirming field accuracy) and cone beam CT (for
visualizing internal anatomy within the treatment field).
In addition to external radiation, the SWRCC Radiation Center
also offers high dose rate (HDR) implant services. Our staff
have considerable experience and expertise with this
brachytherapy modality, in which highly conformal radiation is
given to limited areas using catheters implanted into the tumor
volume. Example sites include the breast (using MammoSite
catheters), prostate, and gynecological malignancies.
We pledge to provide timely, evidence-based cancer care,
while maintaining the individuality of the patient.
